OpenAI creates a safety and security committee while testing a new AI model

OpenAI has announced the formation of a new committee to oversee the safety and security measures taken in the company's projects and operations. The Safety and Security Committee consists of members selected from the Board of Directors and is charged with evaluating and continuing to develop the processes and safeguards of the San Francisco-based artificial intelligence company.
The new committee was formed as OpenAI began testing its next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) model, and the company recently shared the Specification Model, a document that highlights the company’s approach towards building a responsible and ethical AI model

In a blog post, the company highlighted details of the newly formed committee, stating: “Today, the OpenAI Board of Directors formed a Safety and Security Committee led by Directors Brett Taylor (Chair), Adam D’Angelo, Nicole Seligman, and Sam Altman (CEO). The committee is responsible for making recommendations to the full Board on critical safety and security decisions for OpenAI projects and operations.”

Aside from the directors, OpenAI's Head of Readiness Alexander Madry, Head of Safety Systems John Shulman, Head of Security Matt Knight, and Chief Scientist Jakub Paczucki will also be part of the panel

The Committee's first task will be to evaluate and further develop AI's processes and safeguards over the next 90 days. After that, the Committee will share its findings and recommendations with the full Board of Directors. The recommendations will be subject to Board review, after which OpenAI will share the approved recommendations publicly

These new developments at OpenAI are linked to the company's new initiative, and it has begun testing the next generation of its AI model, calling it a “frontier” AI model, and highlighting that this as-yet-untested large language model will bring the company a step closer to general intelligence. Artificial (AGI)

AGI is a type of artificial intelligence that can understand, learn, and apply knowledge across a wide range of real-world tasks that are similar to human intelligence. Some definitions of artificial general intelligence also highlight that it is capable of autonomous performance and can develop a certain level of self-awareness
